SIMAD was established as an institute on November 6, 1999, and began its operations with great enthusiasm. A significant milestone was reached on January 20, 2011, when the Board of Trustees of the former Somali Institute of Management and Administration Development (SIMAD) approved its transformation into a full-fledged university. As part of this expansion, the origins of the Faculty of Economics can be traced back to the Department of Economics, which was established within the former Faculty of Economics and Social Science in 2011. As the university grew, the demand for specialized economic education increased, leading to the establishment of the Faculty of Economics as an independent entity in 2015. This move enabled a more focused and rigorous approach to teaching and research in economics and related fields.

Over the years, the Faculty of Economics has expanded its academic offerings to meet the evolving demands of the economy. In 2013, the faculty introduced the Bachelor of Statistics and Planning program, designed to equip students with advanced analytical and data-driven decision-making skills. This was followed by the launch of the Bachelor of International Trade and Investment in 2018, which focuses on global trade dynamics, investment strategies, and economic diplomacy. Most recently, in 2022, the faculty established the Bachelor of Biostatistics, integrating statistical methods with health sciences to support data-driven policymaking in public health and research.

The Faculty of Economics comprises four dynamic departments, each contributing specialized knowledge and practical skills. The Department of Economics focuses on economic theory, policy analysis, and development economics, while the Department of Statistics and Planning emphasizes statistical modeling, data analysis, and strategic planning. The Department of International Trade and Investment covers global trade policies, investment strategies, and economic cooperation, and the Department of Biostatistics applies statistical methods to health sciences for research and policymaking.

Committed to excellence, the faculty offers a rigorous curriculum that develops strong quantitative and analytical skills, preparing students to address real-world economic issues. It promotes evidence-based research to contribute to socioeconomic development and cultivates ethical leadership among its graduates. Through industry collaborations, the faculty ensures that its programs remain practical and career-oriented, aligning with market needs.

By maintaining high academic standards and fostering intellectual growth, the Faculty of Economics at SIMAD University continues to be a hub of excellence. It produces graduates who make meaningful contributions to national and global economic development, shaping the next generation of economists, statisticians, trade experts, and biostatisticians. Through innovative teaching, research, and industry engagement, the faculty remains at the forefront of economic education and professional development.
