The 4th IGAD Scientific Conference on Migration, Displacement, and Urbanization Implications for Sustainable Development took place from May 19–21, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Organized by IGAD, the conference brought together academics, policymakers, and practitioners to share research and evidence-based recommendations for improving migration governance, urban preparedness, and reducing vulnerabilities in the region.
One of the key presentations was delivered by Ustad Dahir Abdi Ali, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, who examined the push factors behind internal displacement in Somalia, such as food insecurity, conflict, and climate-related displacement. His findings emphasized the interconnected nature of these crises, which fuel large-scale displacement, and stressed the need for coordinated, long-term solutions.
Additionally, Ustad Dahir participated in a panel discussion on “Drivers and Root Causes of IDPs,” where he outlined critical interventions required by IGAD member states and development partners to tackle the underlying factors forcing people to flee. The conference reinforced the importance of integrated policies to manage migration, support sustainable urbanization, and mitigate forced displacement across the Horn of Africa
